ALIENS? FACT OR FICTION

Let’s say a race of beings came from a solar system very close to us, say a billion light years away. After all, the universe is 13.7 billion light years in size, so that’s really close.  And, since nothing can exceed the speed of light, it would take at least a billion years to get here.  However, since material objects increase in mass as they approach the speed of light, it is impossible to get anywhere near the speed of light.  So, let’s choose 25% the speed of light, or 46,500 miles per second.  That is 167,400,000 miles per hour.  The fastest object every launched from earth reached a speed of 36,000 miles per hour.  So we are talking about a space ship going 4,650 times as fast.

Anyway, this ship will require four billion years to reach Earth.  Four billion years in space.  That is 133,333,333 generations.  Wow!  I guess they’d need a lot of food and water.  Let’s say there are 30 people on the ship.  Roughly three pounds of food and water a day per person equals 90 pounds per day times 365 days = 32,850 pounds per year.  (I hope the food is freeze dried; it’s going to have to keep for a while).  So, 32,850 times four billion years = 131,400,000,000,000 pounds of food.  That’s 131.4 quadrillion pounds of food.  Let’s see, how many refrigerators would that take?  Just kidding.

Wait, what about suspended animation?  I’ve seen that in lots of films.  The closest man ever came to suspended animation is cryogenics.  Some dogs and humans lived for up to 40 minutes with their hearts stopped in freezing water.  Problem…when completely frozen the cells and vessels in the brain burst.  Maybe advanced civilizations can figure that one out.  So, I’ll give in on this point.

Let me give you the reader’s digest version of space travel.  When you travel in weightless space you lose 1% of bone mass per month.  Astronauts coming back from just a few months in space can’t even stand up or walk.  Longer trips would mean total disability.  A way to simulate gravity would have to be found.

On earth, we are protected from radiation by the atmosphere. In space there is no protection.  Astronauts would die from radiation exposure in a matter of weeks unless some very advanced way was found to protect them.  One way proposed is a giant shield.  Fine, except such a shield would then butt against the solar winds, dramatically slowing the ship down.

How about UFO sightings?  Right, what about those lights in the sky no one can explain?  A lot of people have seen them, including airline pilots.  Oh, but they have been explained by science as refracted, reflected light from great distances away.  Northern lights, aurora borealis, etc.

Oh, but you’ve seen these lights move fast, and in ways no airplane could.  Faster than any jet, up, down, sideways.  And you don’t think that can be explained away by refracted and reflected light.  Okay, how about this.  The ship just traveled for four billion years, reached Earth, came down to a few thousand feet, decided not to land, did a few fancy turns, then left to go home.  Yeah, that makes more sense.  Sorry I doubted you.

How about the people who have been abducted!  Oh, right.  There was that Nobel Prize winner, chemist, economist, college professor, and newspaper reporter.  Oh, I’m sorry.  That’s not right.  They were moonshiners, inbred, backwater hillbillies, deliverance retards, third grade educated morons, grave diggers.

How about the aliens who mated with humans!  Animals on earth with DNA 99% the same (horses / zebras, monkeys / man) cannot produce offspring, but aliens from billions of light year’s away can.

Well, can’t aliens reach Earth in just minutes using worm holes?  You mean like the ones in the movie “Contact.”  Of course!  Why didn’t I think of that?  Oh, did I forget to mention…scientists did research into how much energy it would take to keep a wormhole open so a ship could pass through without being compressed to a singularity and stretched to infinity.  It would take the entire energy of a galaxy to do that.

Anyway, that aside, these advanced beings came to earth, but rather than teach people how to use solar power, medicine, or other useful knowledge, they taught people to build monuments to them.  Well, that’s what I would do…make them worship me because I’m so advanced I’m not interested in sharing knowledge, only in being bowed down to.

In reality, pyramids were built by man.  They learned along the way.  They started small and as the technology evolved, they built them bigger.  This technology has been proven by modern men using the simple tools available to people in the times of the pharos.

Well, how about the aliens who crashed on earth and are being held at site 54 in Roswell, NM.  And the remnants of their ship!  Well, let’s examine that.  They flew four billion years in a space ship and just happen to crash at a million miles an hour but didn’t die, and they could breathe our air because it is exactly the same as the air on their planet and in their ship.

How about all the people who originally saw an aluminum weather balloon at the crash site?  Over the years…and as the financial opportunity to cash in on interviews, books, movies grew – the weather balloon morphed into a huge alien ship capable of flying for four billion years.

Sorry to burst your balloon (weather balloon).

We are the only life in the universe.  The universe is 13.7 billion years old and 13.7 in diameter.  The first galaxies formed 13.4 billion years ago.  Our sun formed 5.4 billion years ago.  That means the first civilizations began to evolve 8 billion years before us.  In 150 years, we went from covered wagons to space.  We are about to colonize mars.  How could they tell we were here?  We have telescopes that can determine if there is liquid water on a planet and what the atmosphere consists of at a distance of 40 light years.  We can tell by the radiant heat coming off a planet how advanced the civilization is.  So you think a civilization that is 8 billion years more advanced than ours couldn’t find us if they existed?

What about the multi-verse?  An infinite number of universes all with different types of matter, different advanced civilizations.

Which is more believable….one universe than expands and contracts an infinite number of times, or an infinite number of universes that exist all at the same time?

If you are having trouble with that one, look up “Occam’s Razor.”
