Two children died recently while in the custody of the Border Patrol.  One buy, died of the flu, the other, a girl, from dehydration and a 1050 temperature, after she was not given any water during the 8 hours she was in the hands of the border Patrol.

Karen Tumulty of the Washington Post call the tragedies “A new low” after Homeland Secretary Kirstjen Nielsen blamed the girl’s father for making the dangerous journey.  Trump then said, “If we had a wall, they wouldn’t even try to come here.”

Elizabeth Oglesby in “The” said the border facilities are filthy, over crowded and intentionally kept so cold that migrants refer to them as “hieleras” or ice boxes.

Former Border Patrol agents and human rights activists say there is “a culture of cruelty” within the Border Patrol designed to punish migrants as a form of deterrence.”

There are reports that Borer Patrol agents have beat and sexually abused unaccompanied minors, and deprived them of food and medical care.

These desperate people are fleeing crime, and death threats.  They have a legal right to ask for asylum.  Donald trump is simply catering to his anti-immigration base.  He is denying asylum claims without ever allowing them to be reviewed and locking them up in horrific conditions.

This begs the question, “Why are we locking up immigrants at all?  Is it to keep drugs out of the country?  First, drugs are rarely brought across the border using holes or tunnels under the fences.  And when they are, we’re talking about a few kilos.  Major drug shipments are brought in by vehicles, which go though the normal checkpoints.

Mexicans working in America do, for the most part, pay taxes.  Yet many are afraid to apply for social benefits because they believe it puts them at risk for deportation.  So, there is a net gain between money paid in and benefits taken out.

Immigrants commit fewer crimes percentage-wise than do U.S. Citizens.  From 1990 to 2013, the number of undocumented immigrants in the country tripled from 3.5 million to 11.2 million. Yet during that time, violent crime rates dropped 48% nationwide

As I’ve said in the past, we need immigrants more than they need us.
